Chiropractors have known for a long time what the consequences of carrying a heavy school bag can be on the spine.
It is therefore important to choose the right bag, to fill it properly and, above all, to fit it properly.
What to look for when buying a backpack?
Backpack made of strong but light material. Backpack with two wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps to spread the weight over both shoulders for better comfort.
Then look for “S” shaped shoulder straps that fit the child’s body. Look for a waist belt to keep the weight of the bag close to the body and thus maintain a good balance.
Recommendations when using and filling a school bag
- Distribute the weight evenly in the bag: the heaviest weights close to the body and the lightest towards the outside. Objects that are most useful should remain within easy reach
- Wear and adjust both shoulder straps to distribute the weight of the bag. It is advisable to use the waist belt to keep the weight close to the body.
- The bottom of the school bag should not be below the lumbar curve and the top should not be above the base of the neck.
Important: Do not keep weights in the bag that are not used by the child. The bag should therefore be emptied frequently.
